Schoenherr advised 20VC on the EUR 14.6m seed financing round for Vienna-based AI start-up fonio.ai, one of the largest seed rounds in Austrian start-up history.
fonio.ai develops AI agents for SMEs for whom phone availability is business-critical. At its core lies an orchestration layer that coordinates various AI models with the company's software in real time, with 90 % of inquiries resolved fully autonomously. In addition to telephone support, WhatsApp support is already available. Email and chatbot support are expected to follow within the next three months, and an in-house AI-powered CRM is planned for launch by the end of Q3. The company serves over 7,000 customers across DACH and beyond, automating approximately two million calls per month, and is now expanding into six new markets, including the US and UK. The round values fonio.ai at EUR 120m and brings total capital raised to over EUR 20m.
20VC is one of Europe's most prominent early-stage venture funds, built by Harry Stebbings from his "The Twenty Minute VC" podcast into a firm managing over USD 800m in assets under management. The investment in fonio.ai represents a significant commitment to the Austrian start-up ecosystem by one of the most sought-after investors in global venture capital.
"We are delighted to have advised 20VC on this landmark transaction," said Schoenherr Partner Thomas Kulnigg. "fonio.ai is building something genuinely differentiated – a full-stack AI operating system for SMEs – and it is a privilege to support a fund of 20VC's calibre as it makes its mark in Austria."
Commenting on the transaction, Dominik Tyrybon, who handled the deal together with Thomas Kulnigg, said: "This round speaks for itself – a EUR 120m valuation at seed, led by one of the hottest funds in venture right now, without a pitch deck. fonio.ai has the traction and the ambition to match. It was a pleasure to handle this financing and help 20VC move quickly on a compelling opportunity."
The Schoenherr team was led by Thomas Kulnigg (Partner) and Dominik Tyrybon (Attorney at Law), as well as Daniela Birnbauer (Attorney at Law), who advised on AI and IP matters, and Teresa Waidmann (Partner) and Sylwia Gorzkowska (Associate), who advised on employment law matters.
Law & Strategy acted as advisor to fonio.ai under the lead of Felix Kernbichler (Partner).
